Age Calculator — FAQ
How is exact age calculated?
+
Exact age is determined by counting the full years, months, and days from the birthdate to today's date. The calculator correctly handles edge cases such as birthdays on February 29 (leap day babies) by computing the next closest date in non-leap years.
Why does the total days lived figure seem so large?
+
The total days lived is the absolute number of calendar days from your birthday to today, including all leap years. A 30-year-old has lived approximately 10,957 days. This is often surprising because we intuitively think in years, not days, but each year contains about 365.25 days on average.
How is age counted differently around the world?
+
In most Western countries, age advances on the birthday — a newborn is age 0 until their first birthday. In traditional East Asian age-reckoning (used in some Korean and Chinese contexts), a person is counted as 1 at birth and gains a year at the Lunar New Year, not on their actual birthday. This calculator uses the Western convention.
Does the calculator account for time zones when computing today's date?
+
The calculator uses the local date in your browser, which is determined by your device's timezone setting. If you are near midnight in a different time zone than where you were born, the current date shown may differ by one day from another timezone. For most everyday purposes this has no practical effect.
What is the legal age of adulthood and how can I use this tool for verification?
+
The legal age of majority varies by country and purpose — typically 18 or 21 for most legal contexts. You can use this calculator to verify whether someone has reached a specific age on a given date by entering their birthdate and the relevant reference date. This is useful for event planning, contract preparation, and eligibility checks.
