Tip Calculator — FAQ
What percentage should I tip at a restaurant?
+
In the United States, 15–20% is the standard tip for sit-down restaurant service, with 20–25% for exceptional service. In many other countries tipping is less expected or smaller (5–10%). A 10% tip is generally considered acceptable for counter service or takeaway. Always check whether gratuity is already included in the bill.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
+
Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is technically more accurate and traditional, since the tax portion is not a service cost. However, tipping on the total including tax is increasingly common and makes mental math simpler. The difference on a typical restaurant bill is usually only a dollar or two.
How does the bill split work when people order different amounts?
+
This calculator splits the total (including tip) equally among the number of people. For unequal splits where each person pays for their own order, calculate each person's share individually. Equal splitting is common for group dining when tracking individual orders would be impractical.
Are tips taxed as income for servers?
+
In the United States, tips are considered taxable income for the server and must be reported to the IRS. Employers are required to withhold taxes on tip income. For customers, tips are not tax-deductible on a personal return except in limited business entertainment contexts.
What is service charge versus a tip?
+
A service charge is a mandatory fee added to the bill by the restaurant, often 18–20% for large parties. Unlike a voluntary tip, the restaurant controls how service charges are distributed and they may be subject to different tax rules. Always read the bill carefully to avoid double-tipping when a service charge is already included.
