Custom QR Code — FAQ
Can I use any colors for my QR code?
+
Yes, you can choose any foreground and background color combination. However, for reliable scanning, the foreground (dark modules) must have sufficient contrast against the background (light modules). The QR code specification assumes dark-on-light, and while most modern scanners handle color QR codes, very low contrast or inverted light-on-dark codes may fail on some apps.
What color contrast ratio is needed for a scannable QR code?
+
A contrast ratio of at least 4:1 between the foreground and background is generally recommended for reliable scanning across different devices and lighting conditions. Higher contrast (like classic black on white) ensures the widest compatibility. Pale or pastel combinations with low contrast are more likely to cause scanning failures.
Can I add a logo to the center of my QR code?
+
QR codes include error correction that allows up to 30% of the code to be obscured while still remaining scannable (error correction level H). This is why logos in the center of QR codes work — the redundant data allows scanners to reconstruct missing information. Use the highest error correction level when adding logos.
Will a colored QR code still work with all QR scanners?
+
Most modern smartphone camera apps and dedicated QR scanning apps handle colored QR codes correctly. Older dedicated hardware scanners may require higher contrast. For maximum compatibility — especially for printed materials where you cannot test every scanner — use the darkest foreground color possible on a light background.
What are good brand color combinations for QR codes?
+
The best approach is to use your brand's primary dark color as the foreground and white or a very light shade as the background. Avoid using two mid-tone colors (e.g., medium blue on medium green) as they will not contrast well. Test any colored QR code with multiple scanner apps and on both screen and print before using it in a campaign.
